Summer has arrived, and with vaccinations on a surge, many of us will be most certainly looking to get away on holiday over the coming months. As security is what we do, we wanted to highlight a couple of practical steps you can take to ensure you don’t have any unwanted incidents to your home while you enjoy well-earned time away.
Start from the outside and work your way in.
Assess Your Doors:
Door integrity is something that many homeowners skim over, but if you have a weak wooden door with a simple glass filling, it will be very easy to smash and gain access. Therefore, we recommend that you invest in solid wood doors if possible.
Lock Your Windows:
Before you set off, go around and check that all your windows are not only closed but locked from the inside of the house.
Check Your Side Gate and Shed:
If you have a side passage gate, check that you have a lock on the gate with a solid bolt to make it difficult to barge through. Likewise, make sure that you have a lock on your shed or tool house. These areas can be the first point of calls for burglars as the goods inside tend to be quite valuable for re-sale!
Don’t Leave Spare Keys Out:
Many homeowners leave their spare key under a plant pot or on the wheel of a car. Whether you’re home or away, we would recommend not doing this. Instead, leave a spare key with a trusted family member or neighbour in the case of an emergency.
Opportunistic burglars will be looking to see if the shrubbery has been maintained regularly as well as other things like lighting and if the curtains are closed. We recommend that you do a garden tidy-up before you go away and put your lights on timers so that the house looks lived in while you’re away. Many living in estate homes will also nominate a neighbour to drop by and take in post and opening/closing the curtains for the holiday duration, which isn’t a bad idea either for extra protection.
Refrain from Using Social Media:
Criminals have become very sophisticated in how they monitor homes. One of their primary sources tends to be social media, so it’s essential to be mindful of your posting and refrain from sharing holiday details until you return home again.
Turn off Your Appliances:
Moving into your home, it’s not just about protecting it from burglars; you also want to ensure that there are no accidents in your absence from appliances heating up or power surges. We recommend that you go around and turn off all non-essential appliances from the source and ensure that your fire alarms are working correctly.
Put Valuables Away:
Suppose you have particular valuables on display, such as jewellery or laptops. In that case, we suggest that you store these away in a safe space that is not readily identifiable before you set off on your holidays in the event of a break-in.
Invest in a Monitored Smart Home Alarm:
Last but not least, alarms are a proven way to deter burglars and protect your home.
